But with smashing announcements come not bad opportunities for disappointment about the things that Appledidn’tannounce this time around . Whether they were only feature we ’d been hope for or whispers that dominated the rumor mill , here are some annunciation we wished we ’d get word about , but did n’t .
Apple TV and other rumors
Whither the Apple TV SDK ? Developers are itchy for an official way to get their program onto the Apple television alongside Apple - approved apps like Hulu . Unfortunately , right now the only way they can do so is via AirPlay . A true Apple TV SDK — accompanied , of class , by an Apple TV App Store — seems in some way of life inevitable , but Apple apparently is n’t in any charge to make it encounter .
We saw no Apple television solidifying , either — get alone the mythologic iWatch .
iOS
Apple did n’t announce any new agency to select alternative nonremittal apps in iOS 7 .
Many features we ’d hoped to see arrive on the iPhone and iPad did n’t get announce . There ’s still no way to select third - party apps as default for handling email , calendaring , Web browsing , and the similar — sorry , Mailbox , Fantastical , and Chrome . Apple similarly did n’t denote any memory access for third - political party developers to station their own widgets in Notification Center .
Also , with the exception of being able to contribute a virtually unlimited number of apps to folders , there ’s no new approaching for app system . And there are still no third - political party options to add thingummy ( a la OS X ’s Dashboard ) to your whorl screen or dwelling sieve .
I ’d additionally allowed myself to believe that we ’d last see an iOS app for iCloud file management — sort of a marvelous depository , akin to Dropbox . No such fortune .
Finally , while Siri improvements are significant and much take account , I ’d hoped to seeGoogle Now - style survive transcriptionenter the mixture .
The Mac and Mavericks
Senior editor Dan Frakes and I have long wished for a Mac with an always - on net connection . ( Given that you could buy an iPad with LTE service , the lack of a similar choice for the Mac seems all the more noteworthy . ) Though we ’re delighted by the promise of enormously - meliorate shelling lifetime in the new MacBook Airs , some of us did let loose small sighs of disappointments that there ’s still no LTE or other cellular option available for the Mac .
I also would have bet cash money that Siri would arrive on the Mac with 10.9 , and , unfortunately , would have ended up poorer because of it . Like dictation , Siri is a feature that will likely always feel more useful on touchscreen machine ( where school text stimulus is slower - going ) , but there are for certain use cases for Siri on the Mac as well . I ’m not sure what Apple is waiting for at this point in time ; I , for one , ca n’t expect to start talking to my Mac and have it react in meaningful ways .
It ’s also at least a bit surprising that Apple did n’t show off a design renovation in Mavericks . I ’m not complaining about this one per se — I conceive Mountain Lion looks just fine . But I do find out it peculiar that , while repaint so many pixels on the iOS side , Apple seemingly thinks OS X ’s core visual theme look just okay as is . That may well be because the iOS invention overhaul is coming at a special point in Multi - Touch ’s chronicle : Now that user interpret how iOS works , the arrangement can propose fewer visual hints about what is and is not tappable than was previously call for ; since there ’s no correspondent evolution materialise on the Mac , OS X may not ask such a vast change .
What we saw
All that said , what Appledidunveil at WWDC look polished , impressive , and worth start excited about — and we still have many months of Beta and changelogs before iOS 7 and OS X are released to the world .
