I ’ve been using an 11 - inch MacBook Air as my main computing machine for ten calendar month now , but I ’d never even open up up the Mail app until today . However , there are some interesting new features inMac OS X “ Mountain Lion”that I wanted to check out .

With Mountain Lion , Apple has integrated the Notes andReminderstools from iOS into Mac OS X. More significantly , the Notes and Reminders are synced across the iPhone , iPad , and Mac through iCloud . So , a Reminder that I tote up on my iPhone shows up on my MacBook , and a note of hand that I type on my MacBook is immediately available from my iPhone and iPad .

I had already migrated from using Outlook for my Contacts and Calendar , because I wanted my link and calendar information to be useable from all of my twist and kept in sync . However , I have deflect using Mail , and I refuse the idea of keeping my email synchronize through iCloud because Apple require that I use my iCloud electronic mail name and address to make that work .

I can drag and drop emails from Mail to create tasks for the Reminders app.

I ’m still not interested in using the @me.com email address , but I am willing to use the Mail software . Why ? Reminders . WithMountain Lion , I can sweep an email from Mail and omit it on the Reminders icon , and automatically add a Task or monitor upshot that is then synced to my iPhone and iPad .

I can assign a date and sentence for the reminder , or I can trigger off the monitor free-base on location . For case , I can drop an electronic mail from my editor about a composition deadline into my Reminders and set it to alert me when the deadline is come on , or I can embroil an email from my wife about grocery store we need and place it to cue me when I am in proximity to the store .

I actualise that Outlook has monitor as well , and that there are various way that I might be able to sync , automate , or otherwise incorporate Outlook with my iPhone and iPad . But , reminder “ just act upon ” so I do n’t see any need to float upstream and make it harder than it has to be .

Just as Android has more value for users who are place in the Google ecosystem – people who swear on Gmail , Google Docs , etc.–and Windows Phone may be a salutary choice for people who depend on a Microsoft infrastructure , you get more from Io and Mac OS X if you use them together and make the most of how they mix and deal entropy . Mail is no exception .

I ca n’t promise I ’ll stick with Apple Mail . switch over operating organization , nomadic chopine , browsers , and chain armor clients all take a chip of a learning curve to get accustomed to . Once the dust has settled some , I ’ll be able to determine if Apple Mail will work for me long term , or if the novelty of Reminders and iOS consolidation is n’t really worth it .
