A terribly sad e-mail came in from Macworld lector Sharifa :
I deleted an iPhone back up from iTunes by mistake and have been trying all day to retrieve it . I lose all my honeymoon pics !
iTunes backups of an iPhone , iPad , or iPod touch do n’t stop apps and some variety of spiritualist . They arrest setting and certain kinds of documents stored within apps , and may contain images store in an iOS equipment ’s Camera Roll . Some apps that habituate iCloud or other cloud - base sync mark their local subject matter as not need to be backed up , since it can be restore by logging back into an account or resyncing .
If you habituate iTunes for iOS backups , Apple does n’t salt away :
Apps , which Apple used to let you download into iTunes , and then synchronize back , and which stopped being a feature in iTunes 12.7 . ( See our article on cop with thatand reclaiming memory board space . ) Even when apps were downloaded , they were n’t part of a backup : onlywhichapps were installed was note in the backup file .
Music . Apple can restore euphony via iTunes or stream and download it via Apple Music and iCloud Music Library ( with Apple Music or iTunes Match ) .
All images and video . reckon on how you ’ve synchronise and configured photos , only the Camera Roll ( hold word-painting you took on a equipment ) may be backed up , and it ’s possible to disable that as well . If you sync persona via iTunes , they will be stored either in iPhoto or Photos , and synced via iTunes . With iCloud Photo Library enabled , iTunes does n’t engage with store images or telecasting on your speech sound or tablet at all , as they ’re all cover through iCloud .
Sharifa might have a copy without realizing it if Camera Roll backups were enabled , or through syncing to one of those other places . ( I ’ve email her to suss out . )
If you did n’t realize that pictures and videos are n’t always or to the full stored in an iTunes support , now is the immediate clip to start making a separate backup or setting up sync ! In iTunes , you canfollow Apple ’s instructions to syncto Photos or iPhoto . And then check that you have a Time Machine and host or offsite backup of your media program library on your Mac !
