Apple does n’t really like to use the words “ Artificial Intelligence ” or “ AI ” , more often go with the more generalised condition “ Machine Learning . ” But call it ML , AI , or whatever you want , it has antecedent throughout Apple ’s products – especially on iPhone . It ’s used in the Photos app , Camera , keyboard , Siri , the Health app , and much more .
But it ’s often used in what feel like mostly inconspicuous ways . We do n’t cogitate about facial recognition when Photos group image of people together for us . We have no idea how much AI is at play every time we knock the shutter button to get a great exposure out of such a midget camera sensing element and lens system .
If you want a really obvious example of AI on your iPhone , face no further than the Magnifier app . Specifically , the object detection mode . steer your iPhone at objects and you ’ll get a description of the object and usually how it is situated , all using entirely on - machine AI . Here ’s how to give it a try .
Look for this button (on iPhones with LiDAR) to enter object detection mode.
Enabling detection mode in Magnifier
First , open up the Magnifier app . You may have added it to Control Center or the Action clit on iPhone 15 Pro , but you could also recover it in the App Library or via search .
The app is designed to avail mass see close - up details or read fine print and as assistance for the visually impaired . I utilise it all the time to read the tiny component school text on food promotion .
From there , tap the bracket box on the far right side ( on iPhones with LiDAR ) and then the text bubble clitoris on the left . If your iPhone does n’t have LiDAR , you ’ll just see the text bubble button . Do n’t see the buttons ? Swipe up on the rapid growth skidder to bring out them .

Foundry
You ’ll now be in detection mood . The background gear will give you the choice of consider text and/or discover speech verbal description of whatever you ’re pointing at .
Watch the AI at work
Now , just start point your iPhone at things ! You ’ll see a textual matter overlay of whatever is in view – animal , aim , plants , you name it . It can sometimes take a split - second to update , and it ’s sometimes a footling unseasonable ( and on occasion uproariously awry ) , but the image depth psychology on showing here is impressive . You ’ll get adjectives to describe not just colors but positions and activities .
Check this out :
It greet not just that it was a cat , but asleepingcat , and that it was in not just a bed , but apet layer .
Notice how in the keep abreast example , it was able to key out the earpiece ( white ) , their position ( on a shameful surface ) , and its sexual relation to another objective it detected ( next to a computer proctor ) .
Of course , it gets things awry sometimes . This is n’t a glass table , it ’s a glass bowl . Perhaps the chairs in the background were confusing , or it could n’t determine the bowlful shape due to all the facets and angles .
But indoors or outside , I am constantly stunned at just how well this feature article is able to describe what it is expect at . And here ’s the catch : this is entirely on - machine . Seriously , try put your iPhone in Airplane Mode and it will mold just the same . You ’re not mail a telecasting feed to the cloud ; nobody has any melodic theme where you are or what you ’re doing .
The precision of this object detection and description is not very impressive compare to AI routines that run on elephantine servers in the cloud , taking more prison term with massive processing power and immense object recognition model . Big Tech has been able to outperform this with cloud - computing models for geezerhood .
But this is just one relatively minor social function running easily on any modern iPhone , even those that are several years old . It ’s a smashing example of what Apple is capable of in the AI blank space , and what , with good codification and more breeding , our iPhones could be capable of in the future , all while respecting our privateness and surety .
