I ’m in Las Vegas this week for the annualPMAconference and trade show . I ’ve been here for a few days already , and there ’s one topic that has come up in almost every give-and-take I ’ve had with photographers : Aperture .
More specifically , the topic is : “ Where ’s Version 2.0 of Apple ’s icon management and editing app ? ” With the the show starting this forenoon , it seems pretty clear that we wo n’t see anything announced this hebdomad , and the disappointment I ’m hearing is permeant .
What ’s most interesting to me is the slip in position and utilization . People are n’t actuallyexcitedabout an Aperture update ; it ’s more of a “ will it be significantly better ” eccentric of vibration . And photographer are n’t say that the Adobe competitor , Photoshop Lightroom , is a salutary intersection . No , what I ’m hearing is that neither Aperture nor Lightroom has take custody with this crowd . At least three lensman I spoke with said that they buy both product , and that they are n’t really using either one .
A year ago , there was huge buzz in the pro photograph community of interests over the fact that we had not one , but two comparatively new applications in this space . At PMA’07 , you could n’t take the air into a group of photographers without being asked if you were an “ Aperture or a Lightroom bozo , ” and you would have to support your choice fairly vigorously . This year , more hoi polloi seem to be comfy with the Photoshop - Bridge - Adobe Camera Raw workflow — thanks to the stone - solid release of Photoshop CS3 last leaping — and there are actual question about Apple ’s piazza in this grocery .
I have no insight into what Apple is planning for Aperture , but I do know that PMA’08 would have been the just place to show its loyalty to the professional pic food market . Aperture 1.5 is a good Cartesian product . However , in verbalise with lensman who ’ve used it , they say it ’s not a dandy mathematical product , and that ’s what they involve . I hope Apple ’s listening .
