Welcome to our weekly Apple Breakfast column , which includes all the Apple news you missed last week in a ready to hand bit - sized roundup . We call it Apple Breakfast because we remember it hold out great with a Monday morning cup of deep brown or tea , but it ’s cool if you want to give it a read during dejeuner or dinner hours too .
Mother Nature’s pun
I could be incorrect , but I doubt many pundits had a “ cringe clowning routine feature Mother Nature ” in their anticipation andsatirical previewsahead of last week ’s Apple event . There ’s nothing like a good skit to farm a few laugh and get the audience onside … and this was nothing like a good skit : Tim Cook is no actor , even the professional thespian involve did themselves no party favour , and ( without wishing to pay for comparison with my own puny comedic efforts unite above ) the dialogue had less spark than a decline handwriting from Mrs Brown ’s Boys . But the sequence ’s outstanding offence was that it was so transparently self - congratulatory . Nothing is less amusing than listening to someone boast .
Of of course , a few dad jokes are expect at Apple event , with Craig Federighi especially keen on the art variety . ( Budding comedians take note that Federighi is always the butt of his own humor , which make it , if not always funny , at least charming . ) The remainder here was the sheer volume : 25 minutes into the tonic , with nothing of note yet announced , viewing audience were still watching Tim Cook and Octavia Spencer engage in excruciating give-and-take . It felt enormously self - indulgent .
Now , to be clear , the environmentis important . The green policies Apple alluded to in the Mother Nature skit and throughout the keynote are important too , both for the burden they will have direct and for the pressure they will order on other tech companies to follow suit . Indeed , the Earth would be instantly transform for the better if tech keynotes were all like this , and if tech companies all prioritize the environmental wallop of their merchandise above incremental focal ratio increases and the number of megapixels in their cameras . In all unassumingness , this was a side of Apple I like to see .
Sadly , however , I ’m not at all win over that these thingsarea priority . I just do n’t trust that Apple would be focusing on its environmental policy if it had more substantial product upgrade to speak about .
After all , carbon emissions are not a new concern . Environmental damage because of the excavation of rare - world elements is not a new concern . The leather industry is problematical for a whole bunch of reason and these were all widely understood the last time Apple held a pressure event . Yet this was the first meter Apple – which used to have ashocking environmental record , by the way – devote any serious keynote time to the impact of the iPhone and Apple Watch on our planet . Why ? Because , frankly , theiPhone 15andApple Watch Series 9are worthy but dull updates to those product lines and there was n’t anything right to talk about . And that ’s a weirdly convenience - found path to think about incarnate responsibility in the face of ecologic cataclysm .
I had much the same feeling ( “ Why are you acting so pious about doing something at and for your own convenience ? ” ) later in the consequence , when Apple , disingenuously but completely predictably , let the cat out of the bag enthusiastically about the benefits of USB - C. Yes , that ’ll be the connection standard it fought for years to avoid putting in its phones , and repeatedly sound out would be a terrible approximation . Nice one for pass the iPhone a non - proprietary port , Apple , but do n’t cerebrate we ’re fooled for a second base . You only did this because the EU twisted your limb .
There ’s an one-time political saying that ’s somehow both wholesome and misanthropic : “ When in doubt , do the right affair . ” Apple ’s interpretation of this policy , I ’m regretful to say , appear to be : “ When you have absolutely no choice but to do the correct thing , pretend it was your idea all along . ” Maybe that ’s inevitable when you ’re talk about a Brobdingnagian and highly profitable corp . Maybe the in force we can hope for is “ doing the right thing”becomingprofitable and commodious for corporations , since otherwise none of them will ever do it . But once we ’re that far down the cynicism rabbit trap , I ’m not really in the mood for laughter .
