Up until a month ago , I was happily dependent on an senior , third - generation 30 GB iPod for all my music need . My aggregation is just over 20 GB and growing , so that 30 - gig role player was a good fit .
Then my iPod die out . Kicked the bucket , joined the choir invisible , you knowthe routine .
golden for me , we had a couple ofiPod nanosfloating around the office , so I adopt one of the4 GB modelsfor a tenacious - term rating . My verdict so far : Sure , it ’s got scratches all over it . But I prefer it to my old 30 GB instrumentalist .
Of course , I ’ve played around with the small iPods before , but I ’ve never relied solely on them . Now that I ’ve been be with the nano , I retrieve I like it because it forces me to be more selective about the music I put on it .
At last enumeration , I ’ve got more than 70 iTunes play list . Lately , my favorites have been those I ’ve set up to that mimic my best-loved receiving set station ( position my American roots music in“KPIG,”alternative in“WBCN,”eclectic material in“KCRW,”etc … )
But I could n’t fit more than two of those leaning on the nano . So I created a bunch of smaller playlists for the nano based on those bombastic unity . Nothing especially cunning , just something like :
• ‘ Playlist ’ is‘KFOG ’ ; • Limit to 200 megabyte selected by ‘ least lately bet . ’
That last line of descent is what makes me like the nano . Because it ’s always charge up stuff I have n’t try in a while , I ’ve been cycling through my whole assembling , instead of mix through those huge playlists ( and running into the infamous“is it really random ? ” problem ) . On some of those lists , I ’m hearing songs I have n’t get word in age ; some of them I bury I had .
Of course , I also load up up a few playlists ( Recent Purchases , Current Obsessions ) that are n’t based on ‘ least of late encounter . ’ But I keep gravitating back to those radio playlists , because they keep surprising me .
Yes , I could apply the same ‘ least recently played ’ list on a full - sized iPod — but I do n’t think I would . When you ’ve get mint of disk space , you incline to use it .
( Speaking of which , I do have one suggestion / request , Apple : In the iPod Options preference pane , could you somehow indicate the run GB total as I take playlist ? I get tired of seeing that “ not enough free space ” messageafterI’ve started to sync . )
When I bring this eval nano in from the field , I ’ll be headed online to buy a fresh iPod . But I think I ’m go to skip past the full - sized models ( video or no video ) , and opt instead for one of the new , smaller players ( or maybe a retro - cooliPod miniskirt ) . Likethe mansaid , sometimes small is beautiful .
