After depart Juneau at 9 p.m.—well before the local sunset — we MacMania VI cabin cruiser come alive the next day head for the entrance to Yakutat Bay , the home ofHubbard Glacier . But before the requisite sight - seeing , I had a trend to teach .

Well , actually , it was more like being on a biz show with 10 hosts and just one contestant — it was a Q&A academic session , where attendees can postulate the speaker system any Mac - related query , and we do our good to answer . Typically there will be five or six speakers on leg , so there ’s a chance you do n’t have to in person do every question . No such fortune this clock time around , though , as circumstances meant that the lone question - taker was yours truly .

Overall , I think I handled every question ( excluding a couple about the use of ODBC Administrator and Directory Access in the Utilities folder — two apps I ’ve seldom launch ) , but I did get one stumper : “ When using Safari to graze a site that has a login sort , the first prison term you complete the form , a dialog appears offering three form - related option . you’re able to evidence Safari to never remember what you use for this web site , to not make a decision now , or to deliver the exploiter name and password . If I say Safari ‘ never recollect , ’ how do I then save the drug user name and watchword in the time to come if I change my head ? ”

Safari is not my main web browser , and I could n’t come up with the answer off the top of my head ( nor could anyone else in the academic term ) . Afterwards , I did a bit of try out , and discover the answer , which live in Safari ’s Preferences , on the AutoFill check . flick on Edit next to User Names and Passwords , and you ’ll see a tilt of all the site for which Safari has memorize your login information . Look closely at the list , though , and you ’ll see that it also number internet site for which you ’ve tell Safarinotto store your login entropy . Each of these site will have Passwords Never lay aside in the User Name pillar . To restore the options dialog the next time you load a given internet site , play up the relevant entranceway in the AutoFill inclination and click Remove , then click Done . The next time you fill in the user name and password information for that site , you ’ll again see the prompting asking how you ’d like Safari to retrieve ( or not ) the information .

With the sunup session fill in , I point over to see Ken Smith ofGlazer ’s Camerain Seattle . Glazer ’s Camera was volunteer complimentary loaners on a across-the-board variety of gear mechanism — everything from mellow - remainder digital SLRs to TV cameras and consumer pocket still cameras — to any Geek Cruise meeter who was concerned . I checked my pocketbook at the door , realized I ’ll probably never pass thousands of dollars on a high - end camera , and reserve an entry - level digital SLR , the Nikon D40X , along with an 85 - 200 mm zoom crystalline lens .

After fill out some paperwork , include a credit - card charge dominance in vitrine I do something Rob - like and let the thing topple overboard , I head out to find a full point to shoot some Hubbard Glacier image . I wanted to equate the Nikon to my sac tv camera , a Canon PowerShot SD400 , and I remember the Hubbard Glacier would be a good seat to do so . It turns out that due to weather ( bland gray clouded ) and ice stream in the water system that prevented us from make really close ( mental image fromTitanicwere constantly run through my mind ) , this was n’t in reality a great place to do my testing . alternatively , I ’ll take both camera ashore in Sitka later this week , and receive some nice landscape shots to habituate for examination . I plan on post a follow - up with my position on how the two cameras compare in both epitome quality and usableness . look on how things go , I may also have to visualize out a way to get one of these ( or something similar ) on my birthday gift listing . In my brief time with it so far , I ’ve been impressed — the figure of speech that abide by were taken with the D40X.

The Hubbard Glacier is vast . Really Brobdingnagian . It ’s heavy to describe how grownup it is , but here ’s a shot of the absolute majority of the front end of the glacier — there ’s another pocket-size section out of view to the right wing , but this is in all probability 75 percent of the expression :

The picture does n’t really leave any sentience of scale , but this photo should serve in that regard . In the above photo , notice the darker - browned ice toward the left bound of the image . The following range is a zoom on that division of the glacier , with another cruise ship ( similar in size to our own ) visible in front of the glacier :

It ’s large . jumbo . Beyond comprehension . Even more so when you consider that this glacier cover back into the mountains for76 miles ! Here ’s a close - up of one section of the glacier , where you could see how the front border begins to violate aside as it reach the ocean weewee . And yes , it really did search this blue — evidently you only get that effect when it ’s cloudy out :

Every so often , a big ball of crank will break off and light into the Laurus nobilis ( they call it “ calving ” ) , causing striking sound ( “ glacier thunder ” ) and ocular essence . Unfortunately , we did n’t see any such upshot today , so we were left to study leftover pieces of previous incident :

I especially like the 2nd one , which looked like some sorting of ephemeral animal mind floating past our cabin . And yes , the maitre d' did make a PA announcement , reassuring everyone that our Isaac Hull was reward to stand firm the occasional ice strike . And yes , this did absolutely nothing to hit the images ofTitanicfrom my idea ! But in all seriousness , the glacier was sensational , and on a sail later in the season , you would believably be able-bodied to approach more closely , making it even more fear inspiring . ( Or is that “ ahhhhhh ” inspiring ? )

We ’re now en route to Sitka , Alaska , where tomorrow dawn I ’ll do the unthinkable and go snorkeling in these glacial - stale waters ( current ocean temperature : 47 ° fluorine ) . But I ’m not a complete mug — I’ll be donning a wry courting , which should keep me juiceless , and relatively quick , throughout . I ’ll be taking my underwater camera , and if there ’s anything worth date , I ’ll deal the persona in Friday ’s dispatch .
