Apple has made it increasingly difficult to repair andupgrade Macs . Fifteen years ago , it was possible to replaceboth the RAMand storage in all machines . Today this only works ( formally ) in the Mac Pro .
The SSD lap have long been soldered to the motherboard in the various MacBook simulation , and with the launching of the M1 Macs , Apple went a stair further and placed the memory on the same board as the C.P.U. . It stands to cause , therefore , that it ’s now impossible to supervene upon either component , whether you require to upgrade or perform repair .
But on Taiwanese social medium , the news is now being shared that engineer Yang Changshun in Guangzhou ( viaMacRumors ) has managed to upgrade the RAM in the base model ofMacBook Airfrom 8 GB to 16 GB , and the SSD storage from 256 GB to 1 TB .
The procedure is highly complicated and requires extreme care , as the memory circuits must be remove without damaging the bracket or the central processor that ’s locate right next to it .
This will probably never be viable for the average Mac owner . We do not believe that Apple itself will offer either upgrades or fixing of individual components ; as before , it ’s far more likely to offer a complete motherboard replacement if storage or storage breaks down . But MacRumors writes that there is already speculation that Chinese workshops will extend upgrades .
