When we reviewed the2018 MacBook Air — a freshly renovated version of what had been an aging laptop — we encounter it to be in effect , but not great . It land the august ultraportable up to mod time with a Retina display and Thunderbolt 3 , but it also ratcheted up the price , change to a disappointing central processing unit , made the keyboard alotworse , and tossed aside USB - A and MagSafe .
With the just - harbinger revision of the MacBook Air , it seems that Apple is listen … at least a little . It addresses several of our biggest gripes with the previous model , though not all of them .
An important CPU leap
In reviewing Apple ’s 2018 MacBook Air , I bemoan that the ship’s company went from a C.P.U. with a 15 - W TDP ( thermal plan power ) to one with a 7 - James Watt TDP . There were no configuration selection , either : everyone get a Core i5 - 8210Y. The CPU I was expecting , the Core i5 - 8250U , would have given us twice the cores and threads and more cache .
This twelvemonth , Apple is amaze with super - low - king processor from Intel . But at least they ’re importantly skillful , and you have some options . The entry - level model has a Core i3 - 1000G4 . That ’s still a dual - nub , four - screw thread CPU , and it carry a dispirited fundament and boost clock speed . But it ’s Intel ’s new 10th contemporaries “ Ice Lake ” architecture , which , clock - for - clock , is a mickle quicker . It ’s also come much newer , quicker integrated graphics .
That good example probably wo n’t feel a quite a little unlike than MacBook Air it replaces , but you now have the option to upgrade to a 4 - core , 8 - thread Core i5 - 1030G4 for only $ 100 more or a Core i7 - 1060G7 for $ 250 more . Those should finally give the air travel the performance boost we always want . In particular , the latter model should have a nice gain in graphics power .
The new Magic Keyboard feels better, is much quieter, and has the inverted-T arrows.
More storage, better price
The 2018 MacBook Air was , honestly , overpriced . It was $ 1,199 for 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage . In 2019 , Apple somewhat improved the mannequin and dropped the starting price to $ 1,099 ( still too much ) . 128 GB of depot just is n’t enough , and upgrading to 256 GB made the monetary value jump to $ 1,299 .
The raw MacBook Air starts at $ 999 , and that ’s with a 256 GB SSD . It ’s in effect a $ 300 lower starting toll . If you ’re okay pay the old price , you’re able to promote the RAM from 8 GB to 16 GB , or further the SSD to 512 GB , or upgrade the CPU , and have a much nicer experience .
We used to say you might as well spend $ 200 more and get a 13 - inch MacBook Pro , which starts at $ 1,299 . But now that the Air has a lower starting Mary Leontyne Price and more storage , that ’s no longer the showcase . The entry - degree 13 - inch MacBook Pro is $ 300 more and still only has a 128 GB SSD . Time for a warehousing upgrade there , too . In the meantime , the difference in price and capableness between the Air and MacBook Pro wee a little more sense than it used to .

Ditching the crappy keyboard
When Apple debuted the new MacBook Air in 2018 , it was replacing the last Apple laptop to still apply the oldgreatscissor - switch keyboard with the newawfulbutterfly - mechanism keyboard . It was a big downgrade .
Now Apple ’s back with the Magic Keyboard , a revitalisation of the scissor - switch keyboard of old . It first appeared in the 16 - inch MacBook Pro , and the new 2020 MacBook Air is the next laptop to get it . We accept they all will , over the course of the yr .
The new Magic Keyboard feels salutary , is much quieter , and has the inverted - T arrows .
FaceTime with the MacBook camera is not a great experience.
Apple gets zero points from me from taking the dear keyboard on any laptop computer and screwing it up across the whole laptop line forseveral yearsbefore correcting course . But at least itiscorrecting course , and it ’s gentle to recommend elevate your MacBook again .
Oh , and the MacBook Air is still the only Mac laptop computer you could get without the Touch Bar , which is a bountiful plus in my book ; I greatly prefer the forcible function keys . You still get the useful Touch ID sensor on the right , though .
I still want USB-A and a better camera
The new MacBook Air seems like a lot more of what we want and expected out of its late redesign , but it still has a twain of tender spots .
Apple is still set to make every USB interface have a USB - C connexion . We ’ve been told that the ubiquitousness of USB - C devices is just around the corner for years now , and it ’s still not happen . accouterment makers keep crank out mice , keyboards , storage machine , microphones , audio interfaces , and load of other things with USB - A connecter on them . Putting a single USB - A port on MacBooks would not be a step backward , it would be identification that in the all-encompassing public of USB devices , that interface is still widespread , and we should n’t demand a dongle or bobtail to use them .
FaceTime with the MacBook camera is not a great experience .
Then there ’s the camera . Oh god , that dread 720p FaceTime television camera ! It’syearsbehind the curve for New premium laptop camera . At a bare minimum , Apple should break it up to 1080p with much better clarity and dynamic compass . What we really desire is the TrueDepth mental faculty from the latest iPhones so we can sign in and authenticate with Face ID , use Memoji in Messages ( with a macOS rising slope to add it , of course of action ) , and enjoy vastly higher-ranking photo and video timber .
You may have noticed , a peck more the great unwashed are work from home and holding virtual online meetings these days .
