I just crash out of Apple ’s medicine event where Steve Jobs unveil the iTunes - enable ROKR nomadic phone , the minty - slight iPod nano , and an update version of iTunes 5 . I ’m going to bang hard on all of them in the near future , but before I do I thought I ’d toss out a few titbit I picked up after the event .
The ROKR and 100 Song Limit
Steve Jobs announced that the ROKR would meet up to 100 tracks ( include songs and podcasts ) , yet that figure does n’t jibe with the sizing of a stock Flash memory chip . By Apple ’s reckoning , 100 song takes up about 400 MB of computer storage . Is someone producing a 400 MB Flash Saratoga chip now ?
Nope . The phone includes a removable 512 MB Flash retentiveness chip ( found under the battery in the back of the phone ) . This bit will check up to 100 tracks but the number of Song dynasty it holds is n’t drug-addicted stringently on the size of the Saratoga chip ( though it apparently ca n’t curb more than 512 MB of datum ) . Rather , the 100 rail limitation is part of a DRM scheme that foreclose the telephone set from playing more than 100 tracks .
iTunes 5 keeps track of the number of runway authorized for playback on the headphone so even if your 100 tracks have used only 350 megabyte of the wag ’s electrical capacity , you ca n’t tally more . nano and Button Combinations
While my partner in crime , Dan Frakes , distracted a match of Apple congresswoman , I did what I usually do with new iPods and crunch clitoris combinations to see what the iPod nano would do . It turns out that it behaves on the dot like any other click - bicycle iPod .
To readjust the nano you conjure and take hold Select and Menu for about 6 seconds . Once you reset the nano , insistence Select and toy to have the iPod into Disk Mode — similar to the Mac ’s FireWire Target Disk Mode where the iPod is forced to bestride on the Desktop .
