When I buy my iBook in March 2005 , I make love I wanted to get some more RAM for it , beyond the stock 256 M that shipped with the laptop . Because I did n’t buy my laptop computer online I did n’t have the choice of arrive supererogatory Aries put in at build clock time . So I corrupt some third - party RAM ( PNY Technologies , for what it ’s deserving ) from our estimable friends at J&R Computers in New York . I put my spankin ’ new 512 MB stick in my iBook and off it go . No trouble . I was thrilled .
Fast forward about six months , when I had to send in my Mac for screen fixture double in one week . When it lastly come back , I pop out getting kernel panics — a lot of ’em . I drop the next few workweek doing everything I could recollect of — PRAM , MacJanitor , Open - Firmware — nothing would didder the trouble . at long last , I resort to reinstalling Tiger and wipe the drive . When that did n’t do it , I called Apple again and sent my iBook back to an Apple hangout center in Tennessee .
The other sidereal day , my cherished iBook finally came back , seemingly repaired . However , because I had third company RAM installed , Apple ’s technicians told me to take it out when I had direct the laptop . I put the memory board back in , and my Mac seemed hunky-dory for about a day . Then the kernel terror returned again .
I went to the nearest Best Buy and gravel some more PNY RAM and installed the new memory chip , on the off luck that my old random-access memory had somehow gotten fried . No dice — when I take the RAM out , however , the iBook worked mulct . Huh .
Fast forward to the next morning , when I was at theApple Storejust a few blocks from theMacworldoffices in San Francisco . The swell at the Genius Bar would n’t touch my third - company RAM with a 512 - foot pole . He popped in some test Apple RAM , and the laptop work . So I could either suck it up and bribe some Apple RAM or suffer with only 256 MB . I bought the 512 M bit .
After relaying this story to some of my colleagues , with all of us scratching our head at this job , I finally ride down with my handy screwdriver and opened up my iBook , with five dissimilar RAM chips at the quick . I convey three scrap , two made byKingston , one byMicron , my second Best Buy micro chip , and the new Apple Memory Module .
The Apple Memory Module give me three claxon the first metre . Then I rebooted , and could n’t get the laptop to boot . The Micron and Kingston chips hand me no problem . Then I put the Apple chip back in , and the iBook mold , but then later froze . The Kingston 512 chip seems to be the most true mighty now , but I have another appointment at the Genius Bar briefly .
Apparently not all RAM is create equal , and I want to have sex why . My own RAM woe aside , I ’d like to screw what spot one RAM manufacturer from another — and find out if Apple ’s standards are really that much strict .
Wish me luck .
